The Increasingly Belated Relevance of My Pop Culture Recommendations

Oh my God, ya'll! Oh my God. I have found the most wonderful show on television. Well, actually its on Netflix. And it came out 4 years ago. And I don't know why I said ya'll. I lay no claim to a southern accent.

Behold! The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. It is a British-American series from 2009 starring these guys from Arrested Development. The show follows Todd Margaret, an inept American sent to London to hawk an energy drink of questionable taste and legality.
The show is the perfect antidote to too much girly TV, like say Downton Abbey. Don't misunderstand me, I love Downton Abbey: the moody stares, the costumes, the sibling rivalry, Maggie Smith, all of it. Todd Margaret is just so very the opposite: loud, crass, awkward, and containing many jokes about things I need Urban Dictionary to define. I ususally watch the show mouth agape in shock (in a good way.) So while this recommendation is man-friendly, I do not suggest you watch this with someone you are in the midst of wooing, or would soon like to woo. Unless your shocked face is your best face... Just... Just use your best judement.
The humor is similar to Arrested Development, so if you're waiting patiently for the new AD season, may I suggest you watch Todd Margaret in the meantime. There are only 12 episodes in the entire series so I'm trying to move through them at a slower pace than my usual breakneck-speed. My tv-show marathons tend to look something like *this.
It is probably worth mentioning all of my TV recommendations will come from Netflix and therefore will always be lagging behind the rest of the world. You see, I don't have cable. When I moved into my own apartment after living with roommates, I decided to try going cable-less. A co-worker bet me $10 the experiment would only last four months. Well, he failed to take into consideration my complete apathy towards viewing team sports of any kind and the fact that I stopped watching American Idol after season 2. I am going two years strong without it. I know I could keep a little more current and watch most shows on-line but buffering makes me crazy. Downton Abbey is the only exception to the on-line embargo.
*Clip from Portlandia. Another Netflix recommendation.

Addendum: My co-worker, the one who is sorely missing his $10, informs me you can also catch Todd Margaret on the Independent Film Channel.

  1. Found your blog on Joy the Baker's site - your writing is really good and funny. Glad I found you! I've been trying to go cable-free for a while but I am such a tv junkie I think my withdrawal could be serious. I'm super impressed you've done it for 2 years now!
